How Texans Can Keep Cool!

Several of the ways people kept cool during life without air conditioning can still be used today to help control your home’s cooling costs. For instance, the use of ceiling fans can help make you feel around five degrees cooler without having to turn down your thermostat. Other modern “cooling hacks” include:

  • Upgrade to LED and Fluorescent Lights – Certain types of light bulbs give off heat and cause air temperatures to increase. Both LEDs and fluorescents use less energy and give off little to no heat.
  • Cook Meals on the Grill – Using the stove, cooktop, oven, and even the microwave will create heat. Who does not like freshly grilled meats and veggies? Plus you can cook a wide range of foods if your grill has separate side burners.
  • Increase the Insulation in Your Home – Modern homes’ walls are not as thick as older homes. As such, it is beneficial to have additional insulation blown into the walls, as well as in your attic.
  • Adjust Air Vents – The air vents in the home should be adjusted. You want to close vents in the basement since it is naturally cool and there is no need to cool it more. On the main floor of the home, adjust vents so they are partially closed. On upper floors open vents all the way. Remember, hot air rises and cool air falls, so the cooled air upstairs will also help cool the main floor of the home.
  • Run Appliances in the Evenings – Washers, dishwashers, and other such appliances do give off heat, so use them at night when it is cooler, not to mention it also prevents your air conditioning from overworking itself during the hot daytime hours.
  • Upgrade to a Programmable Thermostat – A programmable thermostat allows you to set different temperatures for various times and days of the week. It makes no sense to use your preferred setting during the day when no one is at home. Setting it a few degrees higher helps reduce how often it runs along with lowering your electric bill.
  • Give Your Air Conditioner Unit an Annual Tune-Up – Have a HVAC expert check your system to discover any potential problems sooner, rather than later. Not only will it cost less to fix, but it also ensures your AC is running efficiently and effectively to cool your home and avoids unexpected failures on sweltering summer days.
  • Replace Air Filters Often – Depending on the type of air filter you have, you may need to replace it monthly, every other month, or once every 90 days. Clean air filters ensure air flow is maintained in the home and the AC functions correctly.
  • Have Air Leaks in Ducts Fixed – Small air leaks in ductwork can cause your AC to run more often and harder, since the cool air is escaping long before it even reaches the rooms in the home.
  • Insulate Ductwork – If your ducts are under the crawl space of the home, you can increase the effectiveness of cooled air by insulating the ducts.
  • Upgrade to a New, Modern AC System – If your AC system is more than fifteen years old, it is probably nearing the end of its usefulness, where repairs will end up becoming more common and costly. In the long run, it can be cheaper to have a newer, more efficient A/C system.

No-Bake Cheesecake Flag Cake

Recipe By: Chef John - Allreceipes.com

That you can make this lovely, sweet treat without turning on the oven is probably enough of a reason to give this serious consideration. Besides the taste and light mousse-like texture, I think your guests will enjoy the iconic stars and stripes design provided by the fresh blueberries and strawberries. USA! USA! USA!

Ingredients

Crust

  • 1 ½ cups finely crushed graham cracker crumbs
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 6 tablespoons butter, melted

Filling

  • 1 cup cream cheese at room temperature
  • 1 cup mascarpone cheese at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ⅓ cup white sugar
  • 1 ¼ cups cold heavy whipping cream
  • 20 large fresh strawberries, hulled and halved lengthwise, or as needed
  • 24 large fresh blueberries, or as needed

Directions

  • Combine graham cracker crumbs, 1/4 cup sugar, cocoa powder, and melted butter in a bowl until mixture is thoroughly combined and crumbly.
  • Transfer crust mixture to a 9x11-inch baking dish. Press crust into bottom of dish until smooth and even. Cover dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate until set, about 30 minutes.
  • Mix cream cheese and mascarpone cheese in a bowl until thoroughly combined. Stir in lemon zest, lemon juice, and vanilla extract into mixture.
  • Whisk 1/3 cup sugar into whipping cream in a separate metal or glass bowl until the cream is fluffy and forms soft peaks. Add whipped cream to the cream cheese mixture and gently whisk until filling is soft, fluffy, and well combined.
  • Spoon filling on top of the graham cracker crust, spreading and smoothing the top. Tap the pan gently on a work surface several times to settle the crust and filling. Cover pan tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate until chilled and set, at least 3 hours.
  • Starting at the bottom long edge of the cake, arrange strawberry halves in a horizontal line with the pointed bottoms of the strawberry halves pointing to the right. Start a second stripe of strawberry halves at the top right of the cake, arranging strawberries with the bottoms pointing right in a line stretching about 2/3 of the length of the cake.
  • Continue to make strawberry stripes, starting about 3/4 inch up from the bottom stripe and laying down 3 more stripes stretching the full length of the cake. Make 1 more line of strawberries beneath the short stripe to leave a square space for the blue field of stars.
  • Lay a line of blueberries with the blossom ends pointing up in the upper left square space. Continue to lay down blueberries in lines, berries touching the previous line, until the square is filled with blueberries. Cut cake into squares to serve.

July Garden Tips
Provided by Dallas Garden Club

  • Provide fresh water for birds. Set up a bird bath in the garden, and replenish frequently with fresh water. Providing water options can also discourage birds and squirrels from eating tomatoes.
  • Plant small melons and winter squash by seed. Give plants plenty of room to spread. Amend soil with compost, and thoroughly clear away any debris from previously planted vegetables. Plant 2-3 seeds in a hill, and keep moist. Once plants have three or four true leaves, thin to one seedling. Maintain a consistent schedule of fertilization. You can also plant okra and southern peas by seed now.
  • Set out tomato, eggplant, and pepper transplants. Protect tender transplants with shade cloth until established, and mulch deeply to conserve moisture. All three vegetables are heavy feeders. Fertilize regularly for maximum harvest.
  • Prune roses to promote strong fall bloom. Remove spent blooms, and cut back vigorously growing bushes by a third. Hold off on all other bush and tree pruning until midwinter.
